武士の塾では 手取り足取り教えられなかった
よくわからないまま 何回も
漢籍を素読するだけ
Samurai academy didn’t teach the pupils with great care.
They are just asked to read out
Chinese textbooks repeatedly, without knowing any.
この「わからないまま」が 熟考する機会をつくる
This “without knowing any” gives one
a chance of deliberating.
繰り返し読む中で 少しずつ理解ができてくる
In repetitive reading, one understands things little by little.
師はそれを待つ ゆっくり構えて
The master awaited it, at ease.
そして 師は謙虚だった
He was very modest.
自分も 未だ十分にわかっていない余白が
学びにあることを 知っていた
He knew well there was a room in learning
where even he hadn’t stepped in yet.
子ども達の音読を聴き
共に 学んでいた
Listening to the pupils,
he learnt more together.
これが「教養（素養）」だ！
This is “liberal studies (groundings)”!!
この「わからない」を貴ぶ態度が 今必要だ
Now we need this respectful attitude towards “not yet”.
「わからない」に臨むことは 生きる知恵となる
The heart brings you the wisdom of living.
だからこそ もっと芸術を！
「わからない」の世界に 飛び込んで
So, why don’t you become more familiar with arts?
Jump into the world of “unknown”.
もっと言うと！ 「わからない」は愉しい
Moreover!! it’s pleasure to hold the “mysteries”.
そこへの興味は尽きず
ひとを挑戦させ続けてくれる
The interest in them never dies out
and lets people keep on going forwards.
ちなみに ギリシャ語で
「学校」とは本来 「愉しみ」だそうだ
By the way, I heard, in Greek
“school” indicated “pleasure” originally.
